Not a nice recording. Too fast, a rough, hard touch, without poetry. Gould doesn't do the piece justice. G. Sokolov's playing is absolutely wonderful!

If Mozart's own notation says that this was a piece for beginners, why does Gould thumb his nose at the composers own conceptions? Gould knew better what a beginners sonata should be played, at what insane tempo? Glenn: it doesn't hold up. It's simply ridiculous.

do you know how old was Mozart at the time of this composition? Do you know how mutch he liked the music contest % the use of brilliant improvisation while exibiting for the emperor public, Salieri and so on? Well, this Gould interpretation represent at maximun extent the playing style of a 17th century young child trying to impresse his mentor and capture the audience plause. Nothing more. If you play that with a beethovenian romantic spirit you are out of the story.

The rithmical speed of this toccata Is broken at 1.20 by a super- adagio lyrics suspension, played in evident contrast with the rest of interpretation. A genial trick.

There is a need for some people in this comment thread to consider piano lessons- then they will be free to play Bach their own way. 😉

Glenn Gould is my favorite pianist, and I absolutely detest his Mozart interpretations pretty much across the board. This is terrible. He plays it like he can't wait for it to be over. This sonata is absolutely beautiful and he just massacres it here. He also changes the notes at 0:46 in order to be harmonically the same as the closing cadence of the piece, but it's not what Mozart wrote! It's *worse*. Mozart made it different at the end for contrast, and Gould homogenizes it for no reason.

I love how in this movement you can hear many recollections of his earlier piano sonatas. The section at 0:40 is almost exactly like a section from the first movement of sonata 1. The passage at 1:08 also reminds me of a certain moment from k332 mvt 1 2:19 in the left hand is kind of like the climatic moment in the presto of k280
